Every company has a system for everything, except demand.
What is Demand Intelligence?
Demand Intelligence is a structured understanding of how market demand forms, changes and is expected to develop. It looks outside your company, at how people orient themselves before they choose.
The term has no single owner yet. Software vendors use it for different things, from B2B sales signals to procurement. In this guide it means consumer and market demand, read at market level.
Finance, customers, stock, marketing and sales each have their own system. Those systems show what happens inside the company.
Almost no company continuously sees how market demand changes, how customer needs shift and how brand positions develop. Demand Intelligence fills that gap.
Why is demand hard to see?
Most business systems meet demand late. They register it as a visitor, a lead, a transaction or a revenue line. By then the person has already chosen.
Market research looks further out and gives an in-depth answer to a question set in advance. It captures a moment in time and says little about the months in between.
Your systems see the customers you won. They do not see the market you never met.
What does Demand Intelligence look at?
It looks at one market from three perspectives.
- Market demand. Where demand sits, how it changes and where it is heading.
- Customer needs. Which needs, categories, types, specifications and attributes gain or lose ground.
- Brand position. How demand for brands develops against the market and against competitors.
Demand is read at five levels, always in the same order. The examples below are illustrative.
| Level | Illustrative example |
|---|---|
| Market | Small kitchen appliances, the Netherlands |
| Category | Air fryers |
| Type | Double air fryer |
| Specification | 8-litre capacity |
| Attribute | Dishwasher safe |
How does Demand Intelligence work?
It starts with orientation moments. These are moments when people look into products, needs and brands, explore alternatives and prepare choices. They form in environments such as Search, Social and AI.
The moments are aggregated and placed in a structured model of the market. They are followed over time. A model then projects where demand is expected to go next. Trendata's methodology sets out each step.
Research links digital orientation to later outcomes. Les Binet found share of search led market share by up to a year for cars. In other categories the lead was shorter.
Most peer-reviewed evidence examines search specifically. The extension to Social and AI builds on the same behavioural principle, but it has a shorter research record.
Keep four things apart. Orientation is what people explore. Demand development is how that changes over time. A forecast is the expected development. Realised sales are what was actually bought.
Trendata works with 18.5 billion orientation moments a day. That counts moments, not individual people or purchases. It holds 48 months of historical Demand Intelligence, updated monthly.
Demand forecasts run up to 12 months ahead, at Category, Type and Specification level. They describe expected demand, not exact revenue, sales or stock per SKU.
Developments show 2-6 months earlier than in internal performance data: marketing, sales, CRM and finance. That is not a guaranteed lead over competitors.
How do you work with it?
At Trendata, people work with it through the AI Market Analyst. Teams in strategy, marketing, product and operations ask questions, understand developments and support decisions.
The same Demand Intelligence is available through the Trendata MCP server and API. The MCP server is the connection that lets AI assistants and agents query Trendata directly. It works with MCP-compatible clients. The API connects systems such as BI and planning.
Trendata's development direction is the operating system for demand intelligence: a layer connecting demand to people, systems and work processes. That is an ambition. The AI Market Analyst, MCP server and API exist today.
How is it different from market research and BI?
| What it does well | What Trendata adds | |
|---|---|---|
| Internal BI and performance data | Shows exactly what happens inside the company | The outside view, 2-6 months earlier |
| Market research and panels | In-depth answer to a question set in advance | A continuous view, including developments you had no question about yet |
| Retail and sales data | Realised sales by channel or product | Demand and needs before they become sales, also outside your own assortment |
| Keyword and SEO tools | Search data for content and findability | Demand translated into market, needs and brand position, with forecasts, for decisions beyond SEO |
| Social listening | Conversations and sentiment | Where demand forms and how it develops, at five levels |
| Free trend tools | A quick impression of interest | A structured market model, several sources, business context and forecasts up to 12 months at Category, Type and Specification level |
| Consultancy and ad-hoc analyses | Tailored advice on a specific question | A fixed base that keeps running, which every team can question |
These sources do not replace one another. Demand shows that something moves. Research explains why people move. BI shows what the movement did to your business.
What can you use it for?
It suits midsize consumer goods brands, manufacturers and retailers. They must choose where to focus people, budget and capacity.
- Strategy. Choose markets and priorities on external demand development before you invest.
- Marketing. Focus positioning, campaigns and budget on the needs and brand positions that are changing.
- Product. See which products and attributes become more relevant before you commit to a launch.
- Operations. Add expected demand development to the planning of stock and capacity.
Market, Product, Consumer, Brand and Competitor Intelligence are perspectives within Demand Intelligence. Use those names when they make a specific application clearer.
