Most market intelligence tools differ less in their features than in the data they read.
What is a market intelligence platform?
A market intelligence platform is software that gathers outside information about a market and makes it usable for decisions. That can cover demand, customer needs, brands and competitors. The guide to market intelligence explains the discipline itself.
The word covers very different products. Some read conversations. Some run surveys. Others record sales. So the first question is not which tool is good, but what evidence your next decision needs.
Trendata publishes this guide and sells one of the options below. We have a commercial interest, so test our descriptions against your own decision.
We treat Demand Intelligence as the overarching category. Market, Product, Consumer, Brand and Competitor Intelligence are perspectives within it.
Other publishers use market intelligence as the wider term. The comparison of the two terms explains how they relate, and where the wider use is fair.
What are the best market intelligence platforms?
There is no neutral single answer, because the right tool depends on the data your decision needs. We compare types of tool here, not named products. Every type below does something well.
The table compares functions, as a buyer would meet them. It does not rank products or compare prices.
We did not test products side by side, so we make no claim about which one performs better. Products within one type also differ, so confirm the details in a demo.
| Type of tool | What it does well | What Trendata adds |
|---|---|---|
| Internal BI and performance data | Shows exactly what happens inside the company | The outside view, 2-6 months earlier |
| Market research and panels | In-depth answer to a question set in advance | A continuous view, including developments you had no question about yet |
| Retail and sales data | Realised sales by channel or product | Demand and needs before they become sales, also outside your own assortment |
| Keyword and SEO tools | How much people look up a term, for content and findability | Demand translated into market, needs and brand position, with forecasts, for decisions beyond SEO |
| Social listening | Conversations and sentiment | Where demand forms and how it develops, at five levels |
| Free trend tools | A quick impression of interest | A structured market model, several sources, business context and forecasts up to 12 months |
| Consultancy and ad-hoc analyses | Tailored advice on a specific question | A fixed base that keeps running, which every team can question |
Two scopes belong with this table. The 2-6 months compares with internal performance data: marketing, sales, CRM and finance. Forecasts up to 12 months ahead apply at category, type and specification level.
Trendata is built for midsize consumer goods brands, manufacturers and retailers. It reads aggregated orientation moments, when people look into products, needs and brands, explore alternatives and prepare choices.
These amount to 18.5 billion a day, which are not individual people or purchases. They arise in Search, Social and AI environments. The methodology explains the approach.
Forecasts describe how demand is expected to develop. They are not exact predictions of revenue, sales or stock per SKU. The data has 48 months of history and is updated monthly.
Trendata uses aggregated demand signals only. It uses no personal data and places no tracking on your site.
Other tools read filings, web traffic or sales conversations. Treat them the same way. Ask what the data observes, what it misses and which decision it supports.
Which type of tool fits which use case?
Match the use case to the data first, then compare the products that read that data. Several questions need more than one type, because each sees a different moment.
| Use case | Data you need | Type to look at |
|---|---|---|
| See how your own business performs | Marketing, sales, CRM, finance | Internal BI |
| Measure what sold, and market share | Point of sale and purchase records | Retail and sales data, panels |
| Understand motives behind a choice | Answers to set questions | Market research |
| Follow reactions to a brand or campaign | Posts and media | Social listening |
| Improve findability of content | Term-level search data | Keyword and SEO tools |
| Follow where demand and needs are moving | Aggregated orientation moments over time | Demand Intelligence |
| Answer one specific strategic question | A mix chosen for that question | Consultancy and ad-hoc analyses |
Free trend tools sit beside all of these. They suit a first impression, before you commit to a paid source or a larger question.
How do you choose a market intelligence platform?
Choose by testing the data against a decision you have already made. A demo with your own category tells you more than a feature list. Work through these criteria in order.
- The decision. Write down the choice this tool must support, and the people, budget or capacity behind it.
- The evidence type. Decide if you need answers, conversation, orientation or purchases.
- Coverage. Check your countries, languages and categories, not the global headline.
- Level of detail. Check if it reaches the level you plan at, from market down to attribute.
- History and refresh. Check how far back it goes and how often it updates.
- Method. Ask how signals are collected, cleaned and combined.
- Forecast scope. Ask which levels forecasts cover, over what horizon, and how they were tested.
- Workflow. Check if the output reaches the people who decide, and the systems they use.
Show me a shift in my category that happened last year. When did your data show it?
What share of your sources can I see? What do you do when sources disagree?
What can your data not tell me? A supplier that answers this clearly is easier to trust.
If there is a forecast, was it made with only the information available at the time? Otherwise it is not a real test.
Ask what a tool cannot see. That answer tells you what to buy next.
What is different for consumer brands?
Consumer brands usually need demand and category evidence, while many tools in this field serve business-to-business sales. Win-loss analysis, for example, helps when you sell through deals. It is less central when you sell through shops.
Competitive intelligence often means sales support and win-loss in software. For a consumer brand, it usually means which rivals are gaining demand.
Read the comparison of market, competitive and business intelligence to separate the terms.
Check three things as a consumer brand. Does the tool cover consumer categories at the level you plan? Does it cover your countries in the local language? Can it connect demand to your own results?
Then keep the outcome in view. Good market knowledge should show where to focus people, budget and capacity next. If a tool cannot change that choice, it is a report and not a decision aid.
How does a platform connect to your AI tools?
Ask where the data can go after you read it. Some teams want market knowledge inside the AI assistants, agents and systems they already use. Check which connections exist today, and with which clients.
People work with Trendata through the AI Market Analyst. They ask questions, follow developments and support decisions there.
The Trendata MCP server is the connection that lets AI assistants and agents query Trendata directly. It works with MCP-compatible clients. The API connects the same data to your systems.
Ask every supplier the same question. Which clients work today, which functions are available, and what is still a plan? A clear split between those answers tells you what you can use now.
Do you need more than one type of tool?
Often yes, because each data type answers a different question. Conversation shows what people say. Surveys explain why. Orientation shows what they look into. Purchases show what they bought.
Start with one source that fills your largest gap. Add a second only when a decision needs it. Keep one owner for the combined view, or the tools will produce reports that nobody acts on.
Keep the sources labelled as well. Orientation, forecasts and realised sales are different things. A single blended score hides what you actually know, and that makes the next choice harder.
Frequently asked questions
What are the best market intelligence tools?
There is no neutral top list. Pick one type of tool per evidence type that your decision needs. Then test it on a shift you already know.
Is market intelligence the same as Demand Intelligence?
No. Market Intelligence is an application within Demand Intelligence, the overarching category. It focuses on how demand develops at market level.
Is this comparison neutral?
No comparison written by a supplier is fully neutral. Trendata publishes this one and sells one of the options. We compare types of tool and name what each does well.
What is the difference between market intelligence tools and competitor intelligence tools?
Market intelligence tools look at the wider market. Competitor intelligence tools focus on rivals, often to support sales teams. For consumer brands, the useful question is which rivals are gaining demand.
